Life, Love and the Pursuit....Essentially Kathy

Life, Love, and the Pursuit

Words can ramble on, as mine often do, and rarely do they manage to express the emotion, concept or essential truth that their author has intended to impart. The words below succeed in capturing the moment and have, at various times in my life, held great meaning to me.

"She had a pretty gift for quotation, which is a serviceable substitute for wit."
--- W. Somerset Maugham

What lies before us and what lies behind us
are small things compared to what lies within us.

---Ralph Waldo Emerson

History, despite its wrenching pain,
Cannot be unlived, but if faced
With courage, need not be lived again.

---Maya Angelou

But it was long ago and it was far away
Oh God it seems so very far
And if life is just a highway - then the soul is just a car
And objects in the rearview mirror may appear closer than they are
---Jim Steinman

Of all the injuries inflicted by
racism on people of color, the most
corrosive is the wound within, the
internalized racism that leads
some victims, at unspeakable cost
to their own sense of self, to
embrace the values of their oppressors.
---H. Jack Geiger

I've reached in darkness and come out with treasure
I've laid down with love and I woke up with lies
What's it all worth only the heart can measure
It's not what's in the mirror.. but what's left inside
---Jon Bon Jovi/Billy Falcon

We are not only our brother's keeper;
in countless large and small ways,
we are our brother's maker.
---Bonaro Overstreet

Once upon a time was a backbeat
Once upon a time all the chords came to life
And the angels had guitars even before they had wings
If you hold onto a chorus you can get through the night
---Jim Steinman

Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear.
---Mark Twain

They cry in the dark, so you can't see their tears
They hide in the light, so you can't see their fears
Forgive and forget, all the while
Love and pain become one and the same in the eyes of a wounded child
---Benatar/Geraldo/Capps

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.
---Eleanor Roosevelt

Oh yes, the past can hurt.
But the way I see it,
You can either run from it, or learn from it.
---Rafiki in "The Lion King"

Sometimes people need to be pushed to the edge
to see the truth about themselves.
---Joan Severance

It is the greatest of all mistakes
To do nothing because you can only do a little.
Do what you can.
---Sydney Smith

Courage is in every tear you shed.
---D.R. Durga

With all its sham, drudgery
and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
---Max Ehrmann

"Friendship," said Christopher Robin,
"is a very comforting sort of thing to have."
---A.A. Milne

Childhood is that state which ends
the moment a puddle is first viewed
as an obstacle instead of an opportunity.
---K. Williams (5/5/95)

Sweet Melissa, I often pray for you
I hope your suffering was brief
I hope the angels who watch over all little children
Came for you, and took you someplace beautiful and sweet.
---Benatar/Geraldo/Capps

I believe there comes a time
When everything just falls in line
We live and learn from from our mistakes
The deepest cuts are healed by faith.
---Tolhurst/Grombacher/Giraldol

When there is no enemy within,
The enemies outside cannot hurt you.
---African proverb

We gain strength, and courage, and confidence
by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face...
we must do that which we think we cannot.
--- Eleanor Roosevelt

A hundred years from now,
it will not matter what my bank account was,
the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove........
but the world may be different
because I was important in the life of a child.
--- Unknown

Don't be afraid
Close your eyes
Lay it all down
Don't you cry
Can't you see I'm going
Where I can see the sunrise
I've been talking to my angel
And he said that its alright.
--- Melissa Etheridge

When we close our hearts to someone else.
we may think that we are insulating ourselves,
or those we love, from danger.
The very act of closing our hearts, though,
often does more damage than the risk we are trying to avoid.
--- Alan and Cheryl Greene
